Human error is by far the leading cause of ladder accidents. Never use a ladder in any other way than what the manufacturer intended it to be used for.
Here are some of the most common causes of ladder accidents:
Missing the last step of the ladder, thus falling before you make contact with the ground.
Overreaching when working on a ladder.
Using the wrong ladder for the job.
Placing the ladder on soft and/or uneven ground.
Stepladders range in size from 4 ft. to 20 ft.
Stepladders range in size from 4 ft. to 20 ft.
24 feet
Although personal fall protection is required for workers exposed to a potential fall from an unprotected edge of six feet or more, fall protection is not required for workers on fixed ladders 24 feet or less, or on portable ladders of any height.
Hands down, the lightest ladders will be made from aluminum. Don’t be mistaken, fiberglass and stainless steel ladders are still great options, and they are very sturdy to stand on, but they aren’t lightweight and easy to move around like an aluminum ladder.
The top step counts, so an 8 step ladder will have 7 steps plus the top step, however you should never stand on the top step.
When looking for a 5 Tread step ladder you can expect to start reaching platform heights of just over 1m with a working height of 2.5 m which is ideal for DIY and trades such as decorating.
Working out how tall your house is is no easy task. It’s not like you can just grab a tape measure and set to work! Eyeballing it won’t give you an accurate height either. The last thing you want to do is order a ladder and realise it’s a few feet too short or wildly too long. Don’t worry we’re here to help.
If you live in a single storey house or bungalow then you might already have a ladder that’s tall enough to reach the gutters. The average single storey house is only 3.3 metres or 10.8 foot tall, so you have a lot more choice. There’s a wide selection of step ladders, combination ladders and extension ladders that will allow you to reach this height with ease.
The foot should be one measure out from the wall for every four measures of wall height. So if you want your ladder to reach the 5.2m eaves of a typical two-storey home, the foot should be 1.3m away from the wall.
Now, most people live in two-storey buildings which average a height between 4.7 and 5.8 metres (or 15.5 – 19 foot).
Maintain a 3-point contact (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) when climbing/descending a ladder.
Face the ladder when climbing or descending.
Keep the body inside the side rails.
Use extra care when getting on or off the ladder at the top or bottom.
A simple rule that everyone should learn and follow from ladder training is called the “belt buckle rule.” This rule is very self-explanatory. The user of the ladder should simply keep their body positioned to keep their torso and belt buckle in between the side rails of the ladder.
For every 4 feet of height, position the base of the ladder 1 foot away from the wall. In other words, the distance between the wall and the base of your ladder should be one quarter of the ladder’s height (putting the ladder at a 75° angle). This applies whether you’re measuring in feet or metres.
Do not stand on or above the top two rungs or steps of the stepladder. Do not overload. Stepladders are meant for one person.
